Artist Reception Barb Zimmer
Featured Artist Barb Zimmer
On July 9th we will be holding an opening reception for Artist Barb Zimmer as the featured artist in our Gallery starting in July. Her show will run through August 5th. Barb began her love of art at a very early age using crayons to decorate her parents wallpaper. Her first real work was as an elementary school student where she helped to paint a Christmas mural in the halls of the school. Her formal art training began as an art major at Penn Hall Jr. College in Pennsylvania. Art education was interrupted b marriage, but while living in New Jersey she began taking classes in water color sculpture, and drafting . She also studied with a paste list. She began to incorporate pastel work with her acrylic paintings. During this time she created art work to sell in a gift store and she created custom painted van wheel covers and hand lettering for trucks.
In 1992 a move to Mississippi brought Barb a chance to study Water color techniques with instructor Laurel Schoolar who remains a consultant with current work even though Barb is in Michigan now. Once in Michigan Barb’s education continued with classes at North Central Michigan College and at Crooked Tree in Petoskey where she joined the “Kitchen Painters”. Barb has done some metal painting including a chair for the Petoskey Red Cross and a butterfly for The Butterfly House on Mackinac Island.
A favorite activity as an artist for Barb, has been teaching art to special needs children in the VSA program at the Cheboygan Middle School. Through the years she has discovered that water color is her favorite medium. She enjoys “the loose free flowing, the sometimes frustrating and always fun” results. She also enjoys the challenge of working with acrylic and pastels. Barb was also a completion photographer and she takes her subject matter often from the many slides she has in her collection. Her favorite subjects include the rescue animals she loves so much as well as old barns and everything in Nature. She says” I paint not as one who follows all the rules, but as I feel it and envision it on the paper or canvas. “
Barb will conduct a demonstration of Mini paintings on July 23 from 4-6pm.
Both the demonstration and reception will take place at The Cultural Center in the Food court (across from the Depot) at The Mackinaw Crossings
In Mackinaw City!
